Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the ability to question particular rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
