Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, not just the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
